Fuel Economy

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Malibu 1.5 Turbo’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when you get ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA.) The Altima Sedan doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system, so with the Altima, you won’t save that extra mile while stopped at a stoplight that you would with driving a Malibu.

Vehicle Safety

The Malibu has standard OnStar®, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Altima Sedan doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re unable to move your car, help may not come as quickly.

Both the Malibu and the Altima Sedan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front wheel drive, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty Coverage

Being standard for all Chevy and Toyota cars, the Malibu and the Camry both include a 3-year/36,000-mile Bumper-to-Bumper Limited warranties. They also both include a 5-year/60,000-mile PowerTrain Limited Waranty. However, Chevy has a 2-year/24,000-mile Maintenance Warranty, while Nissan does not. Chevy goes above and beyond by providing you with vehicle maintenance for up to 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Additionally, the Chevy Malibu features a 5-year/60,000-mile Roadside Assistance program. This program features the following services:

    • Lockout Service – You will be assisted when you accidentally lock your keys inside the vehicle.

  • Flat Tire Change – A spare will be installed for you.

  • Fuel Delivery – If you run out of gas, $5 worth of fuel will be delivered to get you back on the road.

  • Emergency Towing – Your car will be towed to its nearest dealer.

  • Jump-Starts – If you need your car jump-started, you will be assisted whether at home or on the road.

The Nissan Altima, unlike the Chevy Malibu, does not have a Roadside Assistance program, so if you accidentally lock your keys out of your car, run out of gas, get a flat tire, or need jump-starts or emergency towing for your car, you’re out of luck. Both the superior Maintenance warranty and the Roadside Assistance Program literally show how Chevy is ready to go that extra mile. This impressive warranty coverage makes the 2016 Chevy Malibu the clear choice for ensured vehicle reliability and exemplifies Chevy’s dedication to you.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Nissan vehicles. J.D. Powerranks Chevrolet 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 20 more problems per 100 vehicles, Nissan is ranked 20th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Nissan vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet 9th in reliability, above the industry average. With 5 more problems per 100 vehicles, Nissan is ranked 12th.

Summary

While the 2016 Chevy Malibu and the Nissan Altima may appear to stack up equally especially in some of their warranty programs, the start/stop technology, reliability, and exceptional warranty coverage of the Chevy Malibu make it the clear choice for smart car buyers.
